Hey,

Lots of new things have been going on during the last month and I am making a plenty of changes to keep up with the pace. I'm planning on a job change and will be focusing a lot on new portfolio material so I can be ready when the time comes.

I've completed the transition of my website from the OspreyCG domain name to MatthewHein dot com. You can now find new and updated work here at www.matthewhein.com . Please feel free to visit the site and if you have any constructive feedback, just reply to this message.

Actually, just email me instead. : )

I'm about ready to try something new and exiting!

This DA account will be closing soon. Despite the feedback I've left for so many other artists on this site, I haven't received much in return. This site is broken. It lacks a culture of constructive criticism and the moderators seem to only feature pictures of blank canvases, bad naruto fanart, sexually explicit photos and...clowns? Whatever.

My thoughts on the transition boil down to the consistency of the experience. Everything I've seen on CGtalk is top of the line material. They have a full time art/ community director who selects only the best work and presents it so that I know every time I log on, I will be amazed and walk away inspired. On the other hand, DA has a bunch of volunteer schmucks that post whatever suits their fancy, like this:

taragon.deviantart.com/art/Dea…

I'm sure we all know what that means!

Since I'm interested in getting real feedback from real professionals who post really good work, I'm moving over to CGtalk.

See you there!

Looks like I finally hit a milestone with the MOD project.

Even with the 60-70 hour weeks at the office, I've still had time to work on the project and fulfill the committments that I made to the Castle Siege team back in February. You may view the completed work here:

The next step is to complete one final asset (a character sheet) and I'm ready to take the next step in the project and generate some environmental concept art for our playable level.

I am in the process of completing some turnarounds for my After-hours illustration project with the Castle Siege Team.

As of today, the Knight and Swordsmaster concepts should be finished. The following character classes are left to be completed:

Scholar (formerly Monk)
Archer
Alchemist

I'm very excited about the Alchemist character, so I am saving him for last. Essentially, he is a medieval mad scientist with an explosive disposition. He carries bombs, magic powders and strange potions into combat and is completely unpredictable. Certain explosives he carries have a random AoE radius and there is the potential for the 'dud' effect where the attack fizzles. The Alchemist can also act as a martyr, where he can run into enemy territory and Jihad. Lots of potential here!

I'm eagerly looking forward to getting these illustrations completed and hope that I get it all done in a timely manner. Perhaps by the first week of February?

Illustrations

I've been focusing on a number of illustrations lately for an after-hours project at work tentatively titled 'Castle Siege'. My goal is to have nine different character class illustrations finalized, as well as nine turnarounds and nine color keys. As you can imagine, this is a lot of work for one person, especially over the short period of turnaround time in which the team wants these illustrations completed.

I should have these done in a week or two, depending on how fast the team will be in communicating their ideas on the concepts that I draw up. It took one week to complete the last two characters (Thief and Assassin), so I anticipate a similar amount of time to finish the next two.

These classes still need to be completed.

Archer (branches off from thief class)
Monk (basic support class)
Alchemist (branches off from monk class)
Knight (branches off from warrior class)
Swordsmaster (branches off from warrior class)

Have a great Christmas,

Hello,

First off, thanks for stopping by to check out my gallery. I really hope you enjoy the material you see.

I'm interested in starting a career as a modeler or environment artist in the game or animation industry.

My interest in modelmaking started when built Lego kits as a kid. I spent countless hours assembling and disassembling the bricks in various combinations, looking or ways to improve upon the original model, or come up with something of my own. Since the possibilities of connecting all of the different elements were infinite, these little bricks opened up a world of possibilities. Some of the incredibly complex models I built were formed out of a number of basic shapes, arranged in such a way to appear more complex then they actually were. One of the things I loved about these bricks is that any model could be disassembled at any time, something that was impossible with clay.

I spent a lot of time building spaceships, houses, castles and dioramas, but by the time I got into high school, I wanted to take my hobby to a different level. The first step was enrolling in a drafting course and the second step was my first foray into 3D - AutoCAD.

Now, don't get me wrong. I loved playing around in AutoCAD. The program really opened my eye to what could be done with 3D graphics. However, I wasn't at all fond of building my models with a commend line based editor. I could spend an hour punching in coordinates and end up with just a couple of bricks. And with the outdated graphics cards on the machines at school, any scene larger than a couple hundred elements suffered from severe lag.

I wanted something that was more intuitive, and found that solution with 3dsmax. Ever since then, I haven't looked back.
